Assisted Living vs. Home Care

A Better Way to Live Well

Are you or a loved one weighing the options between assisted living and home care? It’s an important choice, one that dramatically impacts your quality of life, peace of mind, and ability to live well.

We’re here to help you make sense of it all.

What’s the Difference Between Assisted Living and Home Care?

Assisted living is a community-based living option where residents have their own private space (like an apartment or suite) but have access to 24/7 support, including meals, housekeeping, and assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or medication management.

Plus, there’s often a vibrant social calendar filled with activities like fitness classes, book clubs, & happy hours.

Home care, on the other hand, is support that’s provided right in your own home. Caregivers can assist with personal tasks, light housework, meal preparation, and errands. It’s a one-on-one setup tailored to your routines and can range from a few hours of care each week to 24-hour support.

The Benefits of Assisted Living

Moving into an assisted living community can feel like a big change, but it opens the door to new opportunities for wellness and connection.

Loneliness is a major concern as we age, with nearly 25% of adults aged 65+ socially isolated, according to recent studies. Assisted living changes that by surrounding its residents with peers and fostering a sense of community. Whether it’s a bingo night or a game of bridge, there’s rarely a dull moment, and the chance to make meaningful connections is huge!

Assisted living also offers round-the-clock care tailored to individual needs. If something happens at 2 a.m., there’s always a trained professional ready to jump in and lend a hand. That peace of mind can be a gamechanger for families who worry about all the “what ifs.”

With medication assistance and easy access to healthcare professionals, managing medical needs becomes less of a stress. Many communities even partner with doctors or therapists, so everything you need is just a short walk away.

And who doesn’t love the idea of escaping chores like cooking and cleaning? Assisted living communities take care of everyday tasks, so you or your loved one can use your energy on hobbies, relationships, and relaxation instead.

The Advantages of Home Care

For many, home is where the heart is. Staying at home and receiving in-home care allows for the emotional comfort of familiar surroundings, routines, and memories. It can be especially reassuring for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Not to mention, home care is tailored to what YOU need. Only need help with groceries or a ride to appointments? Done. Need personal care a few mornings each week? That’s an option, too. You get to build a care plan that perfectly fits your needs without committing to more than you want.

Which Option is Right for You?

Now, the big question, assisted living or home care? The answer depends entirely on personal needs, preferences, and budget.

Choose assisted living if you want to be part of a close-knit community, enjoy planned activities, or require consistent support throughout the day and night. It’s especially helpful for those who don’t want the burden of household chores or who live far from family caregivers.

Home care is a better choice if you don’t want to leave your home, but still need help with personal tasks or errands. If care needs are minimal or short-term, this could be the better fit.

Remember, it’s okay to try one and change course later. Many families start with home care and eventually love to assisted living as their needs evolve.

At the end of the day, the right choice is the one that allows you or your loved one to live well, feel safe, and stay fulfilled. Assisted living and home care each bring unique benefits, and whichever path you choose, the goal is the same – to create a happy, healthy, and supported lifestyle.

My daughter and I toured this facility more than once to make a decision. We usually don’t write reviews but everyone was very nice and welcoming so we decided it was the right thing to do. We were escorted around and met residents and staff. The facility was clean and the rooms were nice and modern looking. Hopeful it’ll work out for our family because this is our choice.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, I’ve met at Brentwood has been a real blessing to me and my dad. The staff, NP and all the nurses are first class, caring and so very helpful. There is one individual I’d like to express my gratitude to, Jason at the front desk. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving I picked up my dad from the hospital in East Chicago and brought him to Brentwood in the evening. I was mentally exhausted, stressed out to the max, and not far from tears. Jason, with his calm voice and caring attitude made all the difference. I will always remember Jason’s kindness to me at that time! Thank you!

I would like to thank Brentwood and Ana Mayer for helping out and finding placement for my mother. Ana was incredible and even assisted in picking her up from her location. The entire process took only days to get approved. Thank you Brentwood and Ana for walking us through this process and providing a new home for mom.

On 1-9-24 the camera in my mom's room showed she was sick. I called the receptionist and asked her to send someone to help her. Less than 2 minutes 2 aides came in and were so kind and took very good care of her. This was so comforting to our family to know how the receptionist and aides understood the urgency and took great care to make sure our mom was ok.

My father was unable to live alone and after researching Brentwood and taking a tour we both felt that this would be a good choice. He has now been there for several years and after an adjustment period he has settled in. The employees for the most part are very friendly and helpful. I am confident and comfortable in the care he receives even though he can’t be in his own home anymore. I can rest assured that he is in good hands. I also have found it to be a very clean and safe environment. Thanks for giving me peace of mind!
